Language Courses and Tests (LCaT) prepares learners and prospective university students who are required to write tests of academic literacy, such as the National Benchmark Tests. The preparation is also relevant for international tests such as TOEFL and IELTS. It also designs tests of professional language ability for use in industry and corporate environments. it makes materials and language courses available to those seeking to develop language ability. it also specializes in the evaluation of language policies and language arrangements in institutions.

The University of Cape Town's English Language Centre offers a wide range of English Language courses, including conversational English, language excursions, business English, and preparation courses for the IELTS, TOEFL, FCE or CAE exams. We also offer private lessons both online and face-to-face. You can start your course on any Monday and study for any number of weeks. Our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme is designed for students who need to use English in a university context, and covers topics including essay writing, giving presentations and dealing with academic texts. Located in the vibrant, academically diverse Faculty of Humanities at UCT, the English Language Centre is at the hub of creativity and excitement.
